Booking your first wedding dress alteration appointment can feel a little daunting, especially if you've never had a dress altered before. Many brides tell me they're nervous before they arrive. They worry they'll bring the wrong things, ask silly questions or that their dress will be altered straight away without them really understanding what's happening. The good news is that your first appointment is nothing to be worried about. In fact, it's one of my favourite parts of the alteration process because it's where we get to meet, chat about your wedding, and make a plan to ensure your dress fits beautifully.

Before You Arrive

To get the most from your appointment, there are a few things I'd recommend bringing with you.

Your wedding dress.

The shoes you're planning to wear on your wedding day (or a pair that's the same height).

Your wedding underwear if you've already chosen it.

Any accessories that may affect the fit, such as a hoop skirt or shapewear.

Don't worry if you haven't bought every accessory yet. We can usually work around that and advise you if anything is likely to affect the fit later.

Your Appointment Begins

When you arrive, we'll have a chat about your wedding and your dress.

I'll ask questions such as:

How do you want your dress to feel?

Is there anything you're worried about?

Are there parts of the dress you'd like to change?

Do you have any concerns about comfort or movement?

Every bride is different, so this is your opportunity to tell me exactly how you want your dress to look and feel. There are no silly questions, and I always encourage brides to ask as many as they like.

Trying Your Dress On

Once you're in your dress, I'll carefully assess how it fits.

I'm looking at much more than whether it's too big or too long.

I'll check things like:

How the bodice sits.

Whether the waist is in the correct position.

How the skirt hangs.

The balance of the dress.

How the train falls.

Whether you're comfortable moving around.

Sometimes brides are surprised by how many little details I notice, but that's simply because every adjustment works together to create the finished look.

Pinning the Dress

This is often the part brides find most fascinating.

I'll carefully pin the areas that need adjusting so you can see how the finished dress is likely to look.

Nothing is rushed. We'll look in the mirror together, discuss each alteration and make sure you're happy before any work begins. One thing I always want brides to know is this: Nothing is altered without discussing it with you first. Your wedding dress is incredibly important, and every decision is made together.

Talking Through the Alterations

Once we've pinned the dress, I'll explain what alterations are recommended and why.

Sometimes that might include: Taking in or letting out the bodice.

Shortening the hem.

Adjusting straps or sleeves.

Creating a bustle so your train can be lifted nfor your evening reception.

Small adjustments to improve comfort and confidence.

I'll also explain how many fittings you're likely to need and answer any questions about the process.

After Your Appointment

Once you've gone home, I'll begin working on your dress according to the plan we've agreed. Depending on the alterations required, you'll usually return for another fitting so we can check everything is progressing exactly as it should. Wedding dress alterations are often completed over more than one appointment because it's important to achieve the best possible fit rather than rushing the process.
