You have found the dress. Now it needs to look, feel and move as though it was made for you.

Prom dresses are produced to standard size charts, but real bodies are not standard sizes. A dress may fit at the waist but feel loose at the bust, sit beautifully through the body but be far too long, or look perfect until the straps begin to slip.

Prom dress alterations tailored to you

Every dress is different, so we assess the full garment before recommending any work. Prom dresses can include boning, built-in cups, corsetry, lace, sequins, beading and several layers of fabric. Even an alteration that looks simple from the outside may require careful reconstruction inside.

Common prom dress alterations include:

• Shortening single and multi-layer hems

• Taking in the bodice, waist or hips

• Letting out seams where sufficient fabric is available

• Shortening or repositioning straps

• Improving the fit around the bust and armholes

• Adding or replacing suitable cups

• Adjusting necklines or adding modesty panels

• Altering leg slits

• Repairing or replacing suitable zips

• Adapting corset backs and other fastenings

• Reshaping skirts or shortening trains

• Altering dresses with lace, beads or sequins

The aim is not simply to make the dress tighter or shorter. The whole dress should sit in balance, support the wearer properly and remain comfortable while walking, sitting and dancing.

When should I book prom dress alterations?

We recommend booking your prom dress alterations around eight weeks before the event.

Some dresses need only a straightforward adjustment. Others require several alterations and more than one fitting. Allowing eight weeks gives us time to complete the work in the right order and make any final refinements without unnecessary last-minute pressure.

Prom appointments fill quickly because many local school proms take place within the same few weeks. Book as soon as your dress has arrived and your prom date is confirmed.

Last-minute or express work may sometimes be available, depending on the dress and our existing workload, but it should not be relied upon during peak season.

What to bring to your fitting

Please bring:

• The exact shoes you will wear to prom

• Your intended bra, underwear or shapewear

• Any adhesive cups or specialist support being considered

• A hoop or underskirt if your dress requires one

Shoes and underwear can completely change how a dress sits. The correct heel height is essential when marking the hem, while a different bra or shapewear can alter the position of the bust, neckline and waist.

If you plan to change from heels into trainers later in the evening, tell us at your fitting. One fixed hem cannot sit at the same floor length with two very different shoe heights, but we can discuss the most practical option.

What happens at a prom dress fitting?

​

Your dress will be assessed as a complete garment before individual alterations are agreed. We may ask you to walk, sit, lift your arms and try a few dance movements so we can see how the dress behaves when you move.

This often reveals problems that are not obvious while standing still in front of a mirror. A neckline may gape when you sit down, straps may slip when you raise your arms or a hem may catch when you walk.

Please tell us if anything pinches, scratches, slips or feels too revealing. The fitting is the time to discuss it. You should be able to enjoy prom without spending the night pulling at your dress or worrying about how it is sitting.

More involved alterations may require a second fitting before the dress is finished. We will explain the fitting process after assessing the dress.

Structured, layered and embellished dresses

​

Prom alterations can be as technically involved as bridal work.

A full skirt may have several layers that must each be measured and finished separately. Lace edging may need to be removed and reapplied. Beads and sequins may need to be taken off around a seam, then secured again by hand after the alteration is complete.

Structured bodices need particular care. Taking in the wrong area can move the cups, twist the zip or pull the side seams out of position. Cups can sometimes be added or replaced, but cups alone will not correct a bodice that is too loose.

We plan alterations in the correct order because one change can affect another. Shortening straps can lift the bodice and alter the apparent length, while taking in the waist can change how the skirt hangs.

Can my prom dress be made bigger?

​

Possibly, but it depends on the seam allowance inside the dress.

Some dresses have enough fabric hidden in the seams to provide a little extra room. Others have been cut with very narrow allowances and cannot be let out. Sheer panels, exposed zips, boning and heavy embellishment can also limit the options.

Do not buy a dress that is much too small on the assumption that it can definitely be made bigger. If you are unsure about the fit, arrange an assessment before removing the labels or allowing the return period to expire.

Panels or a corset-style back may occasionally be possible, but these are design changes rather than simple adjustments and will not suit every dress.

Buying your prom dress online

​

Online dresses can often be altered, but photographs do not show the quality of the internal construction or the amount of fabric available inside the seams.

Before ordering, use the seller's own measurement chart rather than relying on your usual high-street size. Choose a size that accommodates your largest relevant measurement and check the delivery date and returns policy carefully.

The honest truth is that a very inexpensive dress is not always inexpensive by the time it fits properly. Uneven seams, misplaced cups and weak internal construction can make a cheap dress more complicated to correct than a better-made one.

Have the fit assessed while an exchange or return is still possible. Once the dress has been cut or altered, it will not normally be returnable.
